Sana’a : Hundreds of students held rival protests at San’aa University in Yemen, yesterday, with some calling for the ouster of President Ali Abdullah Saleh, and others for him to remain in office. Saleh has been in power for 32 years.

Security forces fired tear gas to disperse the two groups when a clash seemed imminent, sources said.

Students supporting the opposition parties led by the Islamist Islah party chanted “Ali, Ali go after your friend Bin Ali” in reference to the deposed Tunisian President Zine Al Abidine Bin Ali.

The student group loyal to Saleh’s party shouted “ Ali or death, Ali or death”, and “the Islah party is terrorist”.

The demonstration by the students backing the ruling party was the first on Saturday, but the demonstration of the opposition students started earlier last week.
