Dubai: UK Prime Minister Theresa May and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammad Bin Salman discussed the situation in Yemen during his visit to London on Wednesday.
During the meeting the two leaders discussed the importance of ending the war and bringing relief to Yemeni civilians.
“The prime minister and crown prince agreed on the importance of full and unfettered humanitarian and commercial access, including through the ports, and that a political solution was ultimately the only way to end the conflict and humanitarian suffering in Yemen,” a statement from May’s office said.
The Saudi-led coalition is fighting the Iran-allied Al Houthi movement in Yemen in a campaign to restore its internationally-recognised government of Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi after al Al Houthi coup booted him from the capital.
Britain has licensed 4.6 billion pounds of weapons sales to Saudi Arabia since 2015.
May said all arms sales were strictly regulated, that Saudi Arabia’s involvement in the conflict was backed by the UN Security Council and her government supported it.
Meanwhile, a meeting of Arab foreign ministers late Wednesday reaffirmed Hadi’s constitutional legitimacy in Yemen.
The ministers were meeting for their 149th regular session of the Arab League Council, under the chairmanship of Saudi Arabia.
The ministers backed measures taken by the Yemeni government aimed at ending the coup and restoring security and stability to all Yemeni governorates.
The council underlined commitment to preserve Yemen’s unity, sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity and reiterated rejection of any interference in its internal affairs.
