Sana’a: Suspected Al Qaida militants shot dead on Friday an intelligence officer in the province of Haadramout, the ministry of defence said.

The ministry’s news site reported that a gunman assassinated colonel Omer Bin Amer, an intelligence officer who was working at Wadia border crossing with Saudi Arabia, in Qatan district. Eyewitnesses said that the gunman, who was riding a motorbike, fled the scene when local people tried to catch him. The assassinated man was walking to his home after performing Friday prayer.

Also in the south, gunmen killed on Thursday night a retired intelligence officer in Al Hawta district, the capital of Lahj province. Local sources said that colonel Abdul Majeed Al Salami was sitting in front of his house in the district when gunmen approached him and opened fire on him, killing him on the scene. Dozens of Yemeni intelligence officers have been assassinated in different places across the country since the beginning of political standoff in 2011.

Yemen government has recently put on trial dozens of Al Qaida suspects, accused of plotting attack on security forces.
