Sana'a: Violence in the Yemen's city of Taez has seen no sign of let-up even as Yemen vice president formed a team of security generals to handle the deteriorating security situation across the country.

A protest activist told Gulf News on Monday that government forces opened fire on a peaceful protest in the city, killing two protesters and injuring at least five.

"We are marching in the streets of the city as part of our daily revolutionary activities  when regime's Central Forces contingent fired at us" an activist said by telephone.

The activist denied that government forces retreated from their positions in the city.

"They still stationing in Cairo Fort, Military hospital  and other places…"

The city of Taez has become a battlefield for fierce fighting between government forces and armed tribesmen who claim to be guardian of the protesters who demand the prosecution of Yemen outgoing Ali Abdullah Saleh.

At least 20 civilians have been killed in four days of shelling.

Security committee

The outbreak of violence in Taiz comes as the Yemen vice president Abd Rabu Mansour Hadi, issued on Sunday a decree forming a security committee designated to restore  security and stability in Yemen.

The committee  formed from seven defected generals and other seven security officers loyal to the government.

The formation of the committee belatedly put in place another term if the GCC deal that stipulates formation of the committee five days after signing the deal.

Headed exchange

Yemen government and opposition did not stop to war of accusations despite signing the GCC deal that calls them to set the stage for  the success of transitional period.

Yemen ministry of defence said on Monday that the government forces arrested a large group of snipers sent to the city of Taiz sent  by the defected general Ali Mohsen Al-Ahmer, in order to seize control of the city.

Opposition media accused the government of looting documents and assets from the ministries  that are due to be run by the opposition's ministers.
