Sana’a: Yemen’s former president Ali Abdullah Saleh has been admitted to hospital for an ear operation and is in a stable condition, one of his aides said on Thursday.

The 71-year-old was taken to the Saudi German Hospital in the capital Sana’a, “just for an ear operation,” the aide told Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Mass protests in 2011 forced Saleh out of office after more than three decades in power and his deputy Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi replaced him under a Gulf-brokered initiative.

Yemen has suffered from increased lawlessness since the uprising in 2011. Islamist militants seized whole towns and districts in the south before being beaten back by the army.

However, they have since regrouped and mounted regular attacks on government officials and installations.

On Thursday suspected al Qaeda members attacked an army base south of Sana’a.
