Sana'a: Eleven Pakistani nationals were referred to the public prosecution on charges of smuggling drugs to Gulf countries via Yemen, officials said on Wenesday.
The men were arrested in the eastern coast of Hudhrmout with about 1.7 tons of hashish in their possession on board a Pakistani ship, officials said.
The smugglers were on their way to neighbouring countries, officials added.
"The arrest operation of the 11 Pakistanis took place in the framework of the cooperation and coordination and information exchange between Yemen and the United Arab Emirates, represented by the drug combating agency," the official news agency Saba quoted the director general of drug combating, Khalid Mutahar Al Radhi as saying.
About 11.7 tons of drugs have been seized in the Yemeni eastern coast since the beginning of this year. A total of 48 Iranian and Pakistani nationals were arrested during this year on charges of smuggling drugs to the Gulf countries. Twenty-seven men were Pakistani nationals and the others were Iranians, according to official sources.
