Al Ain: Scattered light rain and drizzle was reported in Abu Dhabi and some other areas on Sunday morning and the forecast for Monday is similar. Light rain fell on parts of Dubai on Monday morning. Read full report

Forecasters are, however, not pinning their hopes of sufficient rain anywhere in the country that has been experiencing a dry spell for the past few months. More drizzle and scattered light showers are likely in coastal areas up to the northern emirates.

The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) reported 1.4mm of rain in Sir Bani Yas, 1.2mm in Abu Al Bakhoosh Island, 0.6mm in Yasat, 0.4mm in Jebel Jais, and traces in some other areas. Light showers also occurred in Abu Dhabi city.

The rain, said the forecasters, is a result of a system over the central and eastern parts of Saudi Arabia.

Satellite imagery shows a trail of clouds over the Arabian Peninsula coming from Africa across the Red Sea. The system has, however, been bypassing the UAE, producing only scattered clouds.

There is a likelihood of heavy rain and thunderstorms in eastern and central Saudi Arabia that could reach Bahrain and Qatar. "It is an active system but holds nothing more than just light rain and traces for the Emirates," said a forecaster.

Dust storms

People across the nation have been praying for rain to end one of the country's longest dry spells.

Duststorms, repeated bouts of strong wind and alternating cold and hot spells have been affecting the environment and people's health.

Incidents of dust allergies, aggravated breathing problems, unseasonal flu, and throat and skin infections have increased. Only a sufficient amount of rain can give people relief and put an end to the health problems caused by the prolonged dry spell, said the forecasters.

"We are hopeful of some rainy spells next month, but people must pray for rain," one added.

According to the NCMS, the hazy and partly cloudy weather will continue in general in the UAE with chances of light rain in some coastal areas and the UAE islands in the Arabian Gulf.

Temperatures have been steadily rising, reaching 36C in some internal areas. The centre expects a further rise in temperature.

Winds are likely to be moderately rough in general, fresh at times and will kick up dust and sand in internal areas, especially in western areas at times. The sea will be moderately rough, becoming rough at times.
