Al Ain: The unsettled weather has eased after heavy to moderate showers across UAE until Wednesday night.

Forecasters, however,  predict partly cloudy and cloudy conditions, particularly in the northern and eastern emirates, saying that light rain could fall until Friday morning. “The system has effectively moved from the UAE, but it could still be slightly windy and cloudy,” said a forecaster.

Al Ain residents on Wednesday night faced the heaviest thunderstorm in a decade, with torrential rain, wind, thunder and lightning. The thunderstorm and lightening terrified many people who were seen taking refuge in homes, shops, and offices. The storm and continuous rain, according to forecasters, dumped some 50mm of rain in Al Ain, the highest amount of rainfall anywhere in the emirates since Thursday.

“It was the worst thunderstorm I saw in my last 12 years in Al Ain,” said Munsif Mahmood, an Al Ain resident. The rain was just pouring down without a pause, he said, adding that frequent lightning and thunder unnerved him.

Following Al Ain, some 40mm rain was recorded in Hatta, 32mm in Ajman, 25mm in Al Shuwaib, 18mm in Sharjah, 14mm in Umm Al Quwain, 14mm in Fujairah, 13mm in Dubai, and 5mm in Ras Al Khaimah.

Saeed Obaid Al Kaabi, director of the emergency office in Al Ain Municipality, said his department had been working round the clock to pump out water and restore normalcy.

According to the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS), the weather will be partly cloudy in general, becoming cloudy at times over some northern and eastern areas. There are chances of light rain there in the next 24 hours at the least.

The sea will be moderately rough in general, becoming rough at times. Humidity will increase in some internal areas at night and early in the morning.
