Al Ain: Heavy rains hit Sharjah, Fujairah, Ras Al Khaimah and some other parts of emirates on Sunday, flooding streets and low laying areas.
Thick black clouds also covered Dubai skies and light to moderate showers were reported from some areas. Motorist moving on Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road were amazed to see the change in weather with the layers of black clouds.
The National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS) said the day’s heaviest rainfall was in Fujairah and Massafi. The centre had issued a weather alert on Sunday warning people to stay caution especially in the northern and eastern areas.
The Arabian Gulf waters are also stormy and unfit for all types of small vessels.
Several feet high waves are also been rising amid the thunderstorm.
The NCMS expect more rain and unstable weather during the next 48 hours. There also chances of strong winds over the sea and some open inland areas.
Meanwhile, the NCMS has denied the rumours, attributed to the US Navy, about the development of hurricanes and floods in the country. The centre termed them exaggerated and advised people to confirm any such news, obtained from the social media, from the NCMS. The centre said the UAE is currently under the influence of unstable weather conditions since last Thursday that have been causing rain of different intensity over a scattered area. The conditions prevailed for the last three days. The highest accumulated rainfall had been recorded 73.8 mm in Massafi on Saturday, said the centre.
This weather condition, said the NCMS official, is expected to weaken relatively on Monday and Tuesday, and the amount of clouds will also decrease but the chance of rain will remain in the eastern and northern areas.
