Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi International Airport resumed normal services after a brief closure of its runway on Monday due to heavy fog.

The airport runway was closed from 7.50am to 8.30am due to reduced visibility levels.

The flight services resumed shortly after 8.50am once visibility improved to more than 75 metres, Abu Dhabi International Airport sources said.

Etihad Airways diverted 16 inbound flights to five other airports in the region, including Dubai World Central, Sharjah, Muscat, Al Ain and Bahrain.

The arrival and departures of other airlines were also delayed.

According to a statement by Etihad: “Following the reopening of the airport… all the diverted flights have proceeded to Abu Dhabi, while delayed flights have begun departing. Other flights are being rescheduled to carry passengers to their final destination as soon as possible, and extra staff have been sent to Abu Dhabi International Airport to assist delayed passengers. Etihad Airways expects further delays throughout the day as aircraft are repositioned and flights are rescheduled.”
