Al Ain: Flooding once again disrupted normal life in many towns as thunderstorms hit Al Ain at midnight on Monday, with intermittent moderate to heavy rains.

The worst of the weather is over but scattered rain is expected to continue in different areas, especially in the northern and eastern emirates, till Thursday, meteorologists said.

"Several factors contributed to the unstable weather," said one weatherman, noting that western disturbances — mass of upper surface cold air coming in from the west — and a high level of humidity played the lead role in the formation of dark clouds all over the UAE.

"We were expecting much heavier rain than what has actually fallen," the official said.

Clouds and rain have, however, helped lower temperatures and people have been enjoying pleasant weather for the past several days across the country.

The UAE was under thick, black clouds for the whole day on Tuesday. There was continuous rain and drizzle in some parts. The national weather bureau recorded more than 45.6mm of rain in Ghantoot and 51mm in Dhudna, a town on the UAE's East Coast near Fujairah, by 10am.

Heavy rain also hit Dubai, creating traffic chaos on the streets, but just 8.2mm of rain was recorded at the airport. More rainfall was reported in some parts of Dubai later in the day. Abu Dhabi received a brief spell of heavy rain on Tuesday morning that inundated many low-lying areas, creating problem for the traffic and the residents.
