Al Ain: Strong northerly winds have made the Gulf of Oman very rough and forecasters have warned people to stay away from the sea during the weekend.

The wind has also sent a cold wave across the country along with a likelihood of cloudy conditions and rain particularly in the northern emirates. Daytime temperature has dropped to 26 degree Celsius. In some areas, winds may reach speeds of 50 kilometres per hour, said the National Centre of Meteorology and Seismology (NCMS).

The centre also expect a surge in sea water in the eastern coastal areas, and advised people to be alert and take necessary protective measures in case of strong waves hitting the shore. “The sea is rough to very rough in both the Arabian Gulf and the Gulf of Oman,” said the NCMS.

Motorists also have to be careful due to the expected poor horizontal visibility specifically inland areas. Winds could kick off dust and sand and there is a likelihood of suspended dust in some areas. Clouds will also accumulate over the sea and the north-eastern regions with chances of some rain.

Unstable

The weather will also become unstable in the afternoon due to the pressure gradient force between the high pressure over South east of Iran and the surface low pressure over central UAE, said the NCMS.

“The easterly and south easterly surface wind is expected to accelerate over the north eastern regions may exceed 45 kilometres per hour may be with dust suspended and blowing sand on yesterday [Thursday] evening and today [Friday] in the morning,” said the NCMS weather alert.

The centre said that the temperatures will substantially drop across the country. Night temperature has dropped to 14 degrees Celsius. People planning outdoor parties have been asked to be aware of the weather condition and take warm clothes and protection from cold winds.

A forecaster said the weather will today be hazy and partly cloudy and the amount of clouds will increase gradually. Relative humidity will increase over western inland areas during night and early morning.
