Umm Al Quwain: A road safety campaign by Umm Al Quwain Police aims to cut the number of needless deaths and injuries recorded across the emirate every year.

The campaign was rolled out under the theme “Pedestrian safety is our responsibility”.

It was launched as part of the celebration of the Second Global Road Safety Week. No date has been given for the conclusion of the campaign.

Lt Col Saeed Bin Aran, director of the Traffic and Patrol Directorate of Umm Al Quwain Police, said the campaign aims to stem the number of pedestrian accidents caused by motorbikes and vehicles as statistics released by police show the emirate’s roads witnessed 20 pedestrian accidents in 2012, including five deaths.

Lt Col Bin Aran said the campaign was designed to educate the public on crossing roads safely and safe driving tips. There will also be hefty fines for offenders who breach public street safety laws.

Tips are being given to road users via brochures and booklets in Arabic and English. Translators are also on hand to help people understand the safety tips.

The traffic department aims to limit and reduce traffic accidents on all roads.

This campaign also aims to make pedestrians aware of their rights and to let them know motorists should slow down to give way to them at designated pedestrian crossing areas.

The media section of Umm Al Quwain Police was given brochures and gifts bearing the logo of the campaign for distribution.
