Abu Dhabi: Two young girls were run over in the capital when a pickup truck lost control on Wednesday morning.

The accident occurred at 7:20am near Abu Dhabi’s Mina Road intersection, Major Abdullah Al Suwaidi, head of investigation for major traffic accidents at the Abu Dhabi Police, told Gulf News.

“The victims, one aged 14 years and the other eight years, are both Syrian. The eight-year-old is currently in critical condition, while the 14-year-old victim received moderate injuries,” he said at press time.

The incident took place during this morning’s rainfall.

Further investigations to determine the cause of the accident are still ongoing.

Al Suwaidi urged motorists to observe all traffic regulation, especially during such hazardous weather conditions. He also advised drivers to pay full attention to the road.

The rate of run-over accidents in the capital has been declining over the last few years, with a 14 per cent decline between 2011 and 2012. But such incidents are still common.

A year ago, a nine-year-old Arab boy sustained severe injuries when he was run over in a residential neighbourhood on Hamdan Street.
