Al Ain/Sharjah Three young people have been killed over the weekend in two separate road incidents, police have said.

In one of the accidents in Al Ain yesterday morning, two Emiratis lost their lives when the driver of the car lost control reportedly due to speeding. The car swerved on the road, crossing multiple lanes, hit the pavement and then overturned and hit a tree, police said.

The incident occurred near Neam roundabout in Al Ain when S.S, 19, was driving the car accompanied by his brother A.S, 17, and another person.

"S.S. took the roundabout at excessive speed, lost control, swerved to the right for about 78 metres, hit the pavement and then the car overturned, and hit a tree before it stopped," said Colonel Hamad Nasser, director of the outer region at the Abu Dhabi Police, Traffic and Patrols Department.

Both brothers died instantly while M.S, 17, who was in the back seat sustained serious injuries and was rushed to Tawam Hospital in Al Ain. The deceased were taken to Al Jimi Hospital," he said.

Col Nasser called on motorists to be attentive and observe the speed limit for their own safety. He also reminded motorists to keep a safe distance from other vehicles and to always abide by the speed limit.

Failed to brake

Meanwhile, in Sharjah, a 17-year-old girl was run over by a speeding vehicle on Friday evening.

"The Arab student was crossing the road at 6.30pm in the area of Maleha when a motorist failed to hit the brakes on time and was unable to avoid her, ultimately killing her," said an official at Sharjah Police.

The incident is under investigation and the official was unable to confirm what action would be taken against the motorist. The case has been transferred to Sharjah Public Prosecution.

The police official urged pedestrians to be alert when crossing roads in the evenings and at night, and not to cross at undesignated areas.

Sharjah American International School at Al Ramaqia has cancelled its International Day Carnival on Sunday as a mark of respect to the Grade 12 student.

In another incident in Ras Al Khaimah, an Asian driver escaped death after his truck overturned on Al Dayah Road.

A Ras Al Khaimah Police official told Gulf News that the driver of the truck which overturned, sustained serious injuries. The accident occurred because the driver was speeding and lost control of the truck which was loaded with cement.

The bags of cement also scattered and splashed onto the road blocking traffic for several hours. The incident led to traffic delays on both sides of the road as motorists slowed down on the other side of the road to see what was going on.

The police have advised motorists to be vigilant on the road and to abide by speed limits. They have also warned truck drivers to avoid overloading their trucks as it can lead to fatal incidents which could be dangerous to other road users.
