Al Ain: Al Ain Traffic Police have set up an exclusive counter to cater to the increasing number of women drivers in the city.

Women drivers can complete procedures involving licences and registration at the counter without going to the previous facility open to both men and women, said a police official.

Over the past two years, he said, more than 5,000 transactions of women drivers were handled by the traffic police. In 2006, this figure was 2,516, which grew to 2,782 in 2007.

The facility has opened at the new building of the Traffic Police's new building just opposite the old office. Female staff have been deployed at the counter.

Ebrahim Nasser Shamsi, Head of the Licensing Section of Al Ain Traffic Police, said it is a one-window procedure for women drivers where they can come for all kinds of traffic and licensing needs, such as renewal of licences, payment of fines and vehicle examination.

He said that more than 200 female drivers have been coming to the dedicated facility. It is a relatively big number and the reason is women feel more comfortable in the separate facility, said Shamsi.

The dedicated counter also helps women save time. It takes five to 51 minutes to complete a transaction, much less compared to what was the case in the past, he said.

Shamsi said more such dedicated counters would be set up following the success of the pilot counter.
