Traffic diverted to Al Ittihad Road as major roundabout in Sharjah closed
The closure of Al Nahda Square led to a traffic bottleneck on Al Ittihad Road yesterday at the Khulafa Al Rashideen Bridge.
Sharjah: The closure of Al Nahda Square led to a traffic bottleneck on Al Ittihad Road yesterday at the Khulafa Al Rashideen Bridge.
The square will remain closed for a week as work continues to convert it into an intersection.
"There was a traffic bottleneck at the exit and it was also very difficult to get across to the far-left lane," said Ehab, adding that Ittihad Road was clear after the interchange.
The square is frequently used by motorists heading towards Dubai after crossing the Sahara Centre.
Motorists who had to cross the square had to take a right diversion and drive all the way down to Al Majaz, take a U-turn back towards the square, which leads directly towards the shopping centre. Some motorists complained on the lack of road signs.
"I had to go to the Sahara Centre and didn't know how to get there because the road signs pointed to Al Majaz, Abu Shagara and Dubai. I kept going straight until I saw a U-turn, and to my surprise I found myself driving back to the square but on the opposite direction," said Fatima Ebrahim.
Major Sultan Al Juwaid, Director of Anjad at the Sharjah Police Operations room said all motorists will have to drive towards the right side of the road.
Motorists from Al Khan and passing through Khulafa Al Rashideen Bridge have to drive towards the right side, towards Industrial Area 1. Motorists from Al Nahda Road had to take Al Khan Road while those coming from the first industrial area are diverted to the Al Khan Road.
