Abu Dhabi: Ten Asian labourers were injured after two buses collided in Al Samha yesterday morning, police officials have confirmed.
The accident, according to preliminary reports, occurred when the driver of the second bus, a Pakistani national, rammed a bus in front of his, causing both vehicles to swerve from one side of the road to the other on the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway.
"The accident was caused by reckless driving by the second bus driver, who was not only speeding but [failed] to leave sufficient space between himself and the first bus driver," Captain Jaber Saeedan Al Mansouri, Director of Grave Accidents in the Department of Traffic, the Directorate of Traffic and Patrol, Abu Dhabi Police, said.
Traffic blocked
"As a result of their accident, traffic was obstructed for a period of time. However, emergency services responded quickly and were able to ease the congestion caused as soon as it was possible to do so."
Four of the passengers sustained serious injuries.
Police are carrying out further investigations in order to determine the main cause of the accident.
On April 2 this year the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway witnessed a 127 car pile-up that left one person dead and 60 injured. New radars have since been installed, with the speed limit being reduced from 160km/h to 140km/h.
Colonel Hamad Nasser Al Beloushi, Director of the Roads Department, Directorate of Traffic and Patrol, Abu Dhabi Police, called on motorists to respect traffic rules and regulations to avoid being caught in similar situations.
