Sharjah multi-storey car park to ease motorists' woes
A new multi-storey car park at Abu Shagara is expected to be completed by September 2009 at a cost of nearly Dh86 million, a senior municipality official announced on Thursday.

- Abu Shagara is known to be one of the most congested areas in Sharjah, due to the vast number of used car showrooms. A new car park will help solve the problem.
Sharjah: A new multi-storey car park at Abu Shagara is expected to be completed by September 2009 at a cost of nearly Dh86 million, a senior municipality official announced on Thursday.
"The project has been designed to meet the needs of the area for parking lots to contribute in easing traffic congestion and facilitate the flow of traffic in the area," said Salah Al Haj, Director-General of Sharjah Municipality.
The nine-storey car park will be built at a cost of Dh85.9 million and will have up to 1,681 parking lots covering a ground area of 5,300 square metres.
Al Haj pointed out that there are currently two other multi-storey car parks under construction in Abu Shagara, and that the project is part of the municipality's plan to use ten plots solely for parking spaces.
"In five years we aim to have 40 multi-storey car park buildings," he said.
Unrestricted
The other areas that have been chosen for the multi-storey car parks include Al Majaz, Al Qasimiya and Al Souh.
The main aim of establishing the multi-storey parking is to provide the utmost number of car parks for the residents of Sharjah and replace the surface parking along with the small affordable fee for everyone.
"Residents will not be able to reserve a parking space in advance, and it will not be restricted to tenants of nearby residential buildings. The parking spaces will be open to the public and will have to be paid for like any other public parking lots," added Al Haj.
To further combat the lack of parking spaces in the city, Sharjah Municipality recently issued a rule that states that all new residential buildings should provide parking spaces.
Abu Shagara is currently known to be one of the most congested areas in Sharjah, which is mostly due to the vast number of used car showrooms that display their vehicles in public parking lots.
"The used cars will remain in Abu Shagara until the new Auto Zone Market at Riqqa Al Hamra is completed after two years. Only then can the cars be relocated," said Al Haj.
