Dubai: Abu Dhabi International Airport was forced to close on Monday morning due to severe fog.

Flights were diverted to other UAE airports including Dubai World Central, Sharjah and Al Ain. Some were also diverted to Bahrain.

Etihad Airways redirected 16 inbound flights, while other arrivals and departures were delayed.

The airport was closed from 7.30am to 9.40am. The redirected flights have since returned to Abu Dhabi.

An Etihad statement said: "Other flights are being rescheduled to carry passengers to their final destination as soon as possible, and extra staff have been sent to Abu Dhabi International Airport to assist delayed passengers.

"Etihad Airways expects further delays throughout the day as aircraft are repositioned and flights are rescheduled."
