Dubai: Over 2,800 fines were issued during a week in a campaign launched to spread safe driving habits among motorists.
The campaign, which was launched early last week, focused on reckless driving habits on highways and will continue until May 20, said Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of the Traffic General Department of Dubai Police.
Violations
Police issued 2,859 fines and confiscated 36 vehicles for committing violations like jumping a red light, speeding, aggressive driving, not maintaining enough distance, and moving between lanes in a dangerous manner, he said.
Many of the patrol units are spread on Shaikh Zayed Road, Emirates Road, Dubai Bypass Road, Al Khail Road, and Hatta Road.
Chief of Dubai Police Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim recently launched a strategy which aims to reduce the number of road fatalities to zero per 100,000 of the population in Dubai.
Undercover traffic inspectors are present on Dubai roads to fine and confiscate vehicles which have failed to renew their registration after three months from expiry.
The entire police force is given the authority to keep a check on motorists and fine them for reckless driving.
Over 27,800 fines were issued in the first quarter of 2010 compared with only 9,103 in the same period of 2009. an increase of 205 per cent, said Maj Gen Al Zafein.
