Run over victim succumbs to injuries

Ras Al Khaimah: A heavy vehicle ran over an unidentified Asian on Al Jazera-Al Hamra main street Tuesday. The victim was crossing the street when the Asian driver hit the victim and ran over him.

Colonel Hassan Al Jeeda, Head of Traffic Section, Ras Al Khaimah Traffic and Licensing Department said that the victim, who is in his mid-twenties succumbed to serious injuries.

Medics pronounced the victim dead on spot. Authorities have launched an investigation into the accident and arrested the driver of the vehicle.

Colonel Al Jeeda said initial investigations show that the victim crossed the street without checking for traffic on the road. He added that the driver, who was speeding, was shocked to find the victim in front of his vehicle. He stressed that the driver tried to avoid hitting the victim but failed.

Once the police investigations are concluded, the case will be referred to the Public Prosecution for further investigation.

Colonel Al Jeeda said that a total of 55 people have lost their lives in road accidents in the emirate since the beginning of the year.

He urged the public to be more careful when crossing the streets, especially during Ramadan, adding that the public should be focused when they cross the streets, and stick to traffic rules and regulations.

Residents have urged authorities to build pedestrian bridges.
