Dubai The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), has launched a new service for drivers enabling them to obtain a Driver's Performance Certificate which will help them get a discount on insurance.

The certificate is an official document that mentions the number of years the motorist has had the driver's licence, the traffic fines, violations and black points accumulated by the motorist.

Officials hope the new certificate will be useful for motorists who have a clean record to get a better discount from insurance companies.

Good Conduct certificates were issued by RTA earlier too however the driver's performance certificate was launched last week. Previously, the certificate could only be obtained by visiting a customer care centre of the RTA. But now, the service is available online as well.

‘Driving skills'

"By documenting good conduct of law-abiding drivers, we hope, they will be able to get a better discount from insurance companies, and thus to encourage more drivers to be safer on the roads," said Ahmad Hashim Behroozian, CEO of the RTA's Licencing Agency.

"It is not mandatory for insurance companies to give a discount. Usually insurance companies give discounts, considering factors such as age of the driver and past history of the vehicle. But if for instance the vehicle is being insured for the first time with the company, they have nothing to base this on."

The new certificate will give them a glimpse of the driving skills of the motorist, he added. The RTA held a meeting with insurance companies to inform them about the new service.

A drawback of the service, however, is that accident information is not included, noted Behroozian, adding that in future RTA hopes to partner with Dubai Police to include this.

The cost of obtaining a driver performance certificate, including drivers' history, is Dh100.
