Police issue more than 6,000 fines by mobile phone
Police have issued more than 6,000 fines using the multimedia service (MMS) on mobile phones in the first quarter of this year.

Dubai: Police have issued more than 6,000 fines using the multimedia service (MMS) on mobile phones in the first quarter of this year.
Lt Col Saif Al Mazroui, acting deputy director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, said the system to issue traffic fines by mobile phone is a big leap forward in the quest to provide more electronic services.
He said traffic policemen issued 6,472 fines via mobile phones in the first quarter of this year.
The system helps traffic policemen by reducing the time and effort of issuing fines. They can take digital pictures or videos of offenders, especially when they commit offences such as jumping red signals or parking in places allocated for people with special needs.
Lt Col Al Mazroui said with the new system offenders are notified by SMS on their mobiles or by e-mail. They are given the time of the offence, type of offence and the amount of the fine.
He said this is the first system of its kind in the world and it is quick in catching offenders because it saves the effort of issuing paper tickets.
With this system offenders are informed of their offence quickly and the photo or video can be used as legal documents to prove the offence.
