Police crack down on unsafe tyres
Offending drivers face confiscation, black points and fines of up to Dh500.
Abu Dhabi: Drivers face fines and confiscation of their vehicles for using unsafe tyres, police have warned.
Since January 1, about 8,558 drivers have been fined for using unsafe tyres.
"Using faulty or expired tyres will lead to the confiscation of the vehicle for a week and will invite a fine of Dh200. The penalty for the same offence is higher in [the] case of heavy vehicles as they are even more dangerous. Heavy vehicles will be confiscated for a week, in addition to a fine of Dh500 and six black points on the drivers' licences", Colonel Hamad Adil Al Shamsi, the Director of the Department of Traffic and Patrol Police said.
Al Shamsi said that police are taking strict measures against this offence as part of a three-month-long campaign to ensure tyre safety.
"In 2007, 73 major accidents were caused by this offence leading to 53 fatal or severe injuries. This number dropped by 45 per cent in 2008 were 82 major [accidents] led to 29 fatal or severe injuries,"
He called on drivers of heavy and light vehicles to avoid using damaged tyres and make timely replacement a practice to avoid accidents. Al Shamsi also stressed the need to avoid overloading the vehicle.
As part of the campaign that began on June 1, police on patrol have intensified random checking on the streets.
Simultaneously, police have embarked on a second campaign to curb pedestrian related accidents. "Pedestrian safety is a collective responsibility. Both the drivers and pedestrians have an equal role to play", said Al Shamsi.
Do you regularly check the condition of your tyres? Have you ever been involved in an accident caused due to a worn out tyre?

Great News, there are so many cars on the roads with superficial tires. However....how do the Dubai Police classify 'expired tires'?
