Dubai: A man was killed on Saturday morning in a hit- and-run accident in the Jebel Ali area.

Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director General of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, said the pedestrian, an Indian national, was crossing a side road in the Jebel Ali Industrial Area 3 when a car hit him.

Police are on the lookout for the driver who did not stop to help the victim or report the accident.

Meanwhile, yesterday morning a Pakistani bus driver sustained severe injuries when his bus was hit from behind by a truck.

Maj Gen Al Zafein said the victim was driving on the Dubai-Al Ain road at 6:15am when the truck rear-ended his bus.

Fatal accidents

The police official said Emirates Road topped the list of roads with the highest number of fatalities in 2011 with 14 deaths, followed by Dubai Bypass road with 12. Six fatal accidents took place on the Dubai-Al Ain Road, while five died on Shaikh Zayed Road last year.

Three fatal accidents caused four deaths on Al Qudra Street, while four more died on Al Khail Road, three on the Dubai-Hatta Road, two on December 2 Street (formerly known as Al Diyafa), according to the Dubai Traffic Department.

Of all the serious accidents that resulted in deaths or injuries in 2011, failure to leave a safe distance was the first reason, causing 435 accidents in which eight died and 276 were injured, while sudden swerving was the reason behind 332 accidents which left 22 dead and 273 injured.

Driving under the influence of alcohol caused 346 accidents in which 15 died and 83 were injured, lane discipline violations caused 313 accidents leaving 11 dead and 189 injured, while other factors resulted in 311 accidents in which 36 died and 296 were injured.

Other causes

Other main causes of serious accidents included entering a road before ensuring that it was clear, which caused 214 accidents, three deaths and 277 injuries; jumping red lights, which caused 200 accidents, eight deaths and 228 injuries; and negligence and failure to pay attention to the road, which caused was behind 159 accidents, seven deaths and 91 injuries.
