Part of Al Khail Road collapses, motorists urged to use Emirates Road

Two lanes of Al Khail road have been closed after an area collapsed on Wednesday night, Gulf News has learned.

Dubai: Two lanes of Al Khail road have been closed after an area collapsed on Wednesday night, Gulf News has learned.

The Dubai-bound lanes just before Al Barsha bridge will remain closed, and motorists are being urged to use Emirates Road to avoid causing traffic congestion.

The collapse was discovered after a motorcyclist drove into the 3mx3m (10sqm) hole, although he escaped injury.

Hussain Al Banna, Director, Emergency Team at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), said: "A private contractor was assigned to work on the road to provide underground services one month ago. An investigation has been launched to determine if the contractors are responsible for the collapse, as it seems they did not abide by the construction safety guidelines."

"If the company is found responsible, they could be fined up to Dh60,000," he said.

Al Bana continued that the RTA will be monitoring traffic on Thursday morning, and if congestion builds up, diversions may be made to Emirates Road.

I totaly agree with the comment of Mr. ISA. Fine of 60,000 AED is nothing, this is just a value of that part of the road or less, but lucky it was Motor Bike so survived imagine if there was car or any heavy vehicle what would be the damage..

I do not think a fine is the solution of everything. they should have good awareness and inspection instead to be on a practical side.

Imagine if a car goes inside, with family or any other passengers..? because of many construction on the roads without any notice many drivers are facing problems.

Dh60,000 Fine is not enough. The injury caused can be fatal. Risking the lives of the travellers is not acceptable. I hope they take stern action not just with the contractor but also everyone supervising the project.

Instead of blamming the contractor, it would have been good to ensure before things are happeneing. they act only once the tragedies take place. This raises doubts on the professionalism of the concerned authorities.
