Over 500 fines issued in one day for illegal parking offences in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi: Over 509 fines were issued in one day to motorists who parked in undesignated areas, Abu Dhabi Police said. The crackdown comes as part of a campaign launched on Wednesday against illegal parking.
"Illegal parking does not save time. Besides, those who do not follow the rules often disrupt the traffic flow and cause inconvenience to motorists who are not at fault," said Major General Nasser Al Nuaimi, Director of the Interior Minister's office.
The goal of the campaign is to make people aware of the implications and negative aspects caused by their numerous violations.
The practice of parking in undesignated areas and leaving vehicles along main streets has increased considerably, said a statement issued by the police. This prompted them to launch the enforcement drive.
Al Nuaimi said that the authorities would make use of the media in order to reach out to the masses. This includes distribution of brochures and leaflets in several languages.
Urging motorists to comply with the traffic law, he said that the campaign would continue for a month.
Motorists, on the other hand, say officials must find a more permanent solution to the problem than just imposing a fine.
"I hate to admit it but sometimes I just try my luck and park illegally because it takes 20 to 45 minutes during the evening to find a space," says Sunaina Sharma, a resident at Hamdan Street, one of the areas where parking is often problematic.
Fines would not just solve the problem; instead, a permanent solution must be found, adds Sharma.
