Number of accidents drop in Abu Dhabi

Abu Dhabi: The number of major accidents reported in Abu Dhabi has gone down by 43 per cent during the first 20 days of Ramadan, compared to Ramadan last year, police said.

Colonel Khamis Ishaq Mohammad of the Abu Dhabi traffic police said: "The number of accidents, deaths and injuries has declined this year during Ramadan.

"Last year, during the first 20 days, 23 major accidents that resulted in deaths and severe injuries were recorded while this year there was 13 cases — a 43 per cent decline," police said.

The number of accidents reported during the same period fell by 25 per cent, going down from 71 cases last year to 53 this year.

Colonel Khamis attributed the decline to intensified patrolling on the streets. He appealed to drivers to commit to driving more slowly and abiding by the traffic laws.

Throughout Ramadan the police will continue to distribute free Iftar meals, to prevent motorists from rushing to reach their destination, especially just before the fast was to end.
