Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi traffic patrols caught four motorists who were said to be driving at ‘crazy' speeds with each doing over 200km/h on a highway between Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

The motorists were caught red-handed by the new ‘hunter' radars.

Until now, Abu Dhabi Traffic and Patrols Department have caught four motorists in Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway, the western region and two in Al Ain.

Colonel Hamad Al Ameri, Director of External Areas Traffic Department, said the first car, a Lexus was speeding at 225km/h, the second car, a Mercedes, was caught speeding at 222km/h on Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway while the third car, a four wheel drive was doing 204km/h. The fourth car was a Mercedes caught speeding at 210 km/h in the western region.

"The traffic patrols on the external roads have taken legal action against the motorists and they were referred to the public prosecution," Colonel Al Ameri said.

He said excessive speeding on main roads is a sheer carelessness towards the lives of other road users. Therefore, such behaviour requires strict action.

"Main roads are not meant for racing and speeding that go over the permitted speed limits.

"There are specified places for car racing where interested motorists can go and practice their hobbies under supervision and safety procedures, but not on the main roads," he said.

These motorists were caught with the help of the ‘hunter' [Al Qanass] radar, which is a laser-operated device that allows officers to capture a clear image of speeding vehicles, and is also capable of producing videos.

Spot violations

Undercover and ordinary patrol cars have been provided with the radar to spot violators on internal and external roads. The radar is capable of covering all road directions and is sensitive towards vehicles which exceed speed limits at long distances.

The fine for driving a vehicle dangerously or racing on the roads goes up to to Dh2,000, in addition to 12 black points on the driving licence and confiscation of the vehicle for 30 days.

Colonel Al Ameri said police will not be lenient with reckless motorists who endanger their own lives and those of other road users.
