Dubai: More than one motorist was caught speeding in Dubai every minute last year, according to statistics released by the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

A total of 763,596 traffic fines were issued in 2005 in Dubai for speeding. It means 1.4 motorists were caught on camera for speeding every minute, 87 every hour, 2,092 every 24 hours.

The total number of fines for speeding in 2004 was 554,901. This means there was an increase of 208,695 fines for speeding.

The total number of traffic fines issued in 2005 was 1,173,162 compared with 951,537 in 2004.

"The increase in population and the number of cars have led to a record number of traffic violations and accident victims in 2005," said an RTA spokesperson.

The total number of registered vehicles in 2005 was about 630,000 compared to 500,272 in 2004. Around 236 people were killed in road accidents in 2005, an increase of 15 per cent over 2004.

Injuries from traffic accidents in 2005 reached 2,330, an increase of 3.5 per cent.
