Dubai: Drivers or passengers who throw out rubbish from their cars onto roads could invite fines without even realising they have been penalised, according to Dubai Police.

Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, said he personally pulled over a driver whom he'd seen throwing out crumpled tissues from his window on Sunday.

"The driver objected but his offence was clear, and it is punishable by a Dh500 fine and four black points, both in presence and absentia, as well as another fine imposed by Dubai Municipality for trashing the road," Maj Gen Al Zafein said.
