Dubai: An Asian man was run over by a speeding minibus on Emirates Road on Sunday while he was checking the damage to his car after an accident.

The victim, G.A., 35, was said to be speeding on Emirates Road near Al Rashidiya Bridge towards Sharjah. He lost control of his car which hit the road divider and swerved again before coming to a halt on the third lane.

Police said G.A. came out to check the damage to his car. He was surprised by a speeding minibus heading directly towards him. The minibus, driven by M.B., 45, ran over the man and dragged him for 128 metres.

The accident comes at a time when Dubai Police's Traffic Department stepped up its campaign against reckless minibus drivers.

Traffic police has confiscated 59 minibuses for reckless driving and overloading passengers.
