More cars to run on natural gas
Nine workshops will be built in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah to remodify and convert vehicles for alternative fuel use as part of a strategic plan to rid the country of air pollution.

Abu Dhabi: Nine workshops will be built in Abu Dhabi and Sharjah to remodify and convert vehicles for alternative fuel use as part of a strategic plan to rid the country of air pollution.
According to the Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD), which heads the technical committee to implement Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) as an alternative fuel for cars in the UAE, the nine facilities will be contained in 16 new CNG stations already planned.
The other committee members are Abu Dhabi National Oil Company (Adnoc), the Emirates Authority for Standardisation and Metrology, the Civil Defence, Abu Dhabi Police General Headquarters, the Federal Environment Agency, Mubadala, and the Public Transportation Department. A recent meeting of the committee noted that significant progress has been made regarding the implementation of CNG.
During the meeting, the committee reviewed the cleaner air bylaw, which was approved by the Cabinet in May.
According to the committee, with this project underway, significant improvements in the UAE's air quality can be expected, particularly in urban areas.

"So far, 16 sites have been selected to install stations that will provide CNG to the public. Moreover, surveys have been conducted and maps have already been drawn out in preparation to lay the network to supply the CNG. Nine of these 16 stations will be in Abu Dhabi city and the surrounding areas, two in Al Ain, and five in the emirate of Sharjah," a statement from EAD said. The agency's statement said nine of these stations would house conversion to CNG and installation workshops. These workshops with technicians will help convert existing vehicles for CNG use. Five of these facilities will be in Abu Dhabi and its suburbs, one in Al Ain and three in Sharjah.
"Some of these stations will have the capacity to expand in size in the future and will incorporate the conversion workshops within the original design of the stations," the statement added.
Once the CNG project is partially implemented, all auto dealers will be advised to import vehicles that run with CNG and with devices to control emission limits to comply with the European emission limit that has been chosen for implementation in the country.
