Dubai: Several airlines cancelled more than 350 flights in the United States yesterday as a nor'easter gathered strength along the East Coast and threatened to deliver some of the worst flooding to coastal Long Island in 14 years.
The cancellations at the New York's three major airports affected most carriers, said Steve Coleman, a spokesman for the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. More cancellations are expected.
In the UAE, Etihad Airways pushed back its New York-Abu Dhabi flight by up to an hour yesterday as the vicious storm descended. Etihad flight EY101, departing from Abu Dhabi to New York, was scheduled to leave on time this morning at 2am. A spokesperson for Emirates said all its flights to New York were departing on time.
Forecasters in the US expected sustained wind of 64kph and a storm surge of three to five feet. Heavy rain and thunderstorms extended from Florida up the coast to southern New England yesterday morning and the National Weather Service said that Washington's Reagan National Airport had measured 1.43 inches of rain.
