Dubai: Housewife Rihab Ebrahim was shocked when she was pulled over by a police patrol because she had never broken the traffic law since she got her driving licence a year ago.

The Egyptian's initial fear turned into excitement when she was honoured by the Caltex RoadStar bi-annual road safety campaign with a certificate signed by Dubai Police and a cash award of Dh1,000.

Organised by Ciel Marketing and Events in association with Emirates Motor Sports Federation and Dubai Police, the RoadStar campaign has been honouring good drivers for the past 13 years. It is sponsored by Caltex and supported by AGMC BMW, AXA Insurance, Gulf News and Radio 2.

Rihab, who lives in Sharjah, said she will give part of the money to charity and the rest to her children.

Mother of four

Emirati Ashwaq Salem has been driving for over 10 years without any violations. The mother of four from Umm Al Quwain said driving safely is every driver's responsibility and arriving safely is the only reward one should look forward to.

Another winner, Asghar Mohammad, said he was hoping to make it to his driving licence's tenth anniversary without a single fine, but had only committed one offence.

Lydia Maru from Kenya was driving a packed seven-seater as she had family members visiting from her home country, but that did not stop her from ensuring that her baby was safely buckled up in his car seat in the back.

Other winners of the contest's first day in Dubai were Gaffar Ahmad and Mohammad Afsal.
