Abu Dhabi: Child fatalities resulting from traffic accidents have decreased in the capital, the Abu Dhabi Police, Traffic and Patrol Department announced.

"Run-over traffic accidents causing death to children below seven years old went down from 16 cases in 2010 to seven in 2011. Severe injuries also declined from eight registered cases in 2010 to three this year," said Lt Colonel Jamal Al Ameri, head of the public relations department at the Traffic and Patrol Department .

Lt Col Al Ameri was speaking as some 400 children attended an awareness drive launched by the Abu Dhabi Education Council. Children listened to police officers demonstrating how to safely get on and off school buses, the importance of not standing behind the bus and the right behaviour for bus travel.They were also told about the colours of traffic signals and their significance.
