Dubai: The head of the Dubai Police Traffic Department on Sunday chased down a motorist and fined her for driving recklessly.

While on his way to work, Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police's General Department of Traffic, spotted a motorist driving recklessly on Al Garhoud Bridge.

"I followed her to observe her driving behaviour and the number of violations she will commit. After observing for a while I realised that this motorist should be stopped and her vehicle confiscated or else a tragic accident will take place," he said.

The head of traffic department followed the Emirati motorist, R.S.B., who is in her 20s, from Al Garhood Bridge to Al Ittihad Road leading to Sharjah. The motorist was speeding recklessly and swerved from one lane to the other.

The motorist even made a sudden swerve in front of Al Zafein's vehicle as he tried to stop her. He almost got into an accident by what he described "as dangerous reckless driving".

Lesson

"Issuing her a fine for the number of violations was not enough at all. She has to learn a lesson which is why we confiscated her vehicle for two months along with issuing her a list of fines," he said.

Records show that the vehicle's registration and insurance expired in September 2009.

A new rule was recently implemented authorising the approximately 20,000 members of the Dubai Police to issue traffic fines and impound vehicles whose registration has expired.

Earlier, only traffic police officers totalling about 800 could issue such fines.

The new regulation is aimed at curbing the number of road violations and ensure motorists are more conscious of their driving, said Al Zafein.
