Dubai: Motorists in Dubai can now pay hefty traffic fines in instalments, said a senior official at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA).

The move comes after the transport agency found thousands of motorists delaying the registration of vehicles due to heavy fines.

"We have introduced the instalment system to encourage motorists, who have heavy fines, to get their vehicles registered," said Ahmad Hashem Behroozian, Chief Executive Officer of the RTA's Licensing Agency.

Individual motorists can pay in equal instalments if the fine is Dh5,000 or above, while a company (rent a car) can pay traffic, Salik and parking fines in instalments if it is more than Dh30,000.

The Licensing Agency is also in talks with the insurance companies to stop providing cover to the vehicles with expired registration. "We have also intensified the campaign with the help of police to spot vehicles with expired registration and slap hefty fines on the drivers," Behroozian told Gulf News.

He said there are more than 80,000 vehicles with expired registration plying the Dubai roads. The registration of many of those vehicles has not been renewed since its owners have incurred huge fines. The RTA has asked the Ministry of Interior to increase the fines for motorists driving vehicles whose registration has expired.
