Dubai: The Dubai Government has approved a Dh10.7 billion budget for the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) for the year 2010 to ensure the continuation of infrastructure development in the emirate.

"The RTA's budget is the largest amongst all the government departments in Dubai as the Government is determined to improve the roads and transport infrastructure for it is important for economic development," Mattar Al Tayer, Chairman of the Board and Executive Director of the RTA, told reporters on the sidelines of a press conference held to announce plans for a major transport conference in Dubai in April.

Spending power

The RTA's budget comprises 30 per cent of Dubai's Dh35.4 billion budget announced earlier this month. It shows that Dubai has not abandoned its plans for infrastructure development.

Al Tayer said the RTA would continue to have almost a similar allocation during the next couple of years, subject to the Government's approval.

He, however, said the details about the RTA's budget would be released next week. "Since the RTA was established in 2005, we have spent Dh36 billion to improve road infrastructure and the public transport system in Dubai to cope with the massive development in the emirate," he said.
