Abu Dhabi: Abu Dhabi Police recorded 877 violations in November by drivers who failed to wear seat belts.

Major Mohammad Salim Bin Hadif Al Amiri, Director of the Traffic Control Department at Al Ain Police, urged drivers to buckle up. He also pointed out the importance of wearing seat belts as they prevent injuries and absorb the shock of collisions.

Major Al Amiri also said that traffic studies have proved that wearing seat belts reduces fatalities in car accidents by 45 per cent in small vehicles and 60 per cent in light trucks. Injuries also drop with the use of seat belts by 50 to 83 per cent.

Al Amiri also stressed the importance of putting children in the back seat of cars.

Meanwhile, Al Ain Police Traffic Department has conducted 163 traffic awareness lectures for school and university students and school bus supervisors over the past 11 months.

The lectures were in cooperation with Al Ain Educational Zone, universities and Emirates Transport.

First Lieutenant Hamdan Hassan Bin Dheban, Deputy Director of Public Relations at Al Ain Traffic Department, said the lectures focused on the best way to prevent accidents.
