Sharjah: Two major road projects worth Dh1 billion were announced yesterday in Sharjah, aimed at improving the traffic flow and connecting the centre of the city with ring roads and Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Road.

The projects were approved by His Highness Dr Shaikh Sultan Bin Mohammad Al Qasimi, Supreme Council Member and Ruler of Sharjah.

The new development will ease traffic on major roads in Sharjah, said Shaikh Khalid Bin Saqr Al Qasimi, Chairman of the Department of Sharjah Public Works.

The first project comprises a dual four-lane carriageway extension of King Abdul Aziz Road from Abu Shagara Tunnel to Al Jubail street alongside the New Jubail Market to be built on the Creek.

The new extension will be integrated with the existing Sharjah Bridge. The bridge will be upgraded, taking traffic through a clover leaf interchange to and from the bridge in four directions.

The second project involves the extension of Al Arouba Street opposite Al Layyah, where a number of government departments are located. The capacity of the two-lane carriageway will be doubled.
