Dubai: A total of Dh1.2 million worth of prizes have been given by the Dubai Police Traffic Department to 700 motorists who did not commit traffic violations in any of the emirates last year, a top police officer said.

Major-General Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Chief of Dubai Police Traffic Department, said 95 per cent of the winners of the white point system have already received their prizes.

“We know that those who did not commit violations last year are much more than this number but the 700 winners have been chosen by the computer according to their previous records," said Al Zafein, adding “the number of winners will, however, be bigger in the next years.”

The white point system was launched by the traffic department last month to reward motorists who do not commit any violations and reduce road fatalities.

“We  believe in the principle of reward and punishment,” he said.

Dubai Police is embracing a comprehensive traffic strategic plan that aims to reduce the number of deaths to zero by 2020.

The winner of a new car will be chosen from among the 700 winners during a grand ceremony to be in early April to honour the sponsors of the traffic rewarding system, Al Zafien revealed.

The white points system is implemented by Dubai Police to encourage motorists to follow traffic rules and become safer drivers as well as to reduce the number of deaths in road accidents

Each eligible person can receive a total of 12 white points a year, one for each month. One white point will be credited at the end of each month.

A motorist loses his entitlement to the month’s point on being involved in any kind of accident or for committing a violation during that month.
