Deaths from traffic crashes fall sharply in Ras Al Khaimah
Number of accidents also decline drastically to 316 from 615

Ras Al Khaimah: Deaths from traffic accidents in Ras Al Khaimah fell sharply last year compared to 2010, data showed.
A report issued by the Directorate General of Traffic Department showed the road deaths declined to 56, said Colonel Abdullah Ali Munkis, the director of traffic at the General Directorate of Ras Al Khaimah Police.
Col Munkis said there were 316 road accidents last year compared to 615 in 2010. Among the accidents in 2011, there were 215 collisions, 47 cases of running over and 42 of vehicles overturning.
Among the 2010 accidents, 433 involved collisions while 97 vehicles overturned. Data also showed 81 cases of running over, Col Munkis said.
He said the remarkable decline in the number of accident-related deaths in the Emirate was attributable to great efforts by the Ras Al Khaimah Police and the Traffic Department. These efforts were in line with the Ministry of Interior's strategy, which focused on spreading a traffic safety awareness in the community.
Police organised awareness lectures and workshops for students at schools and drivers of buses and trucks, Col Munkis added.
He said police have approached the Ministry of Awqaf and Islamic Affairs to request preachers at Friday prayers to advise parents not to allow children to drive without a driver's licence or ride motorcycles without protective gear.
