Dubai: Police have warned that vehicles will be impounded immediately if motorists are found to be driving in a way that threatens public safety.

Some 150 vehicles have been impounded for speeding and driving recklessly since the beginning of the campaign that started a few months ago, said Lieutenant Colonel Saif Muhair Al Mazroui, acting director at the General Department of Traffic at Dubai Police.

Traffic Police would earlier impose fines on offenders, but will now impound cars and fine offenders to reduce fatalities.

A campaign to reduce road fatalities was initiated a few months ago and was intensified during Ramadan.

Reckless bikers are also being pulled up as part of the campaign. Some 850 motorcyclists have been fined and 20 motorcycles impounded since the start of Ramadan.
