Dubai/Sharjah/Al Ain An: Emirati man succumbed to his injuries after being involved in a serious road accident in Na'ama area in Al Ain, while other emirates reported a number of minor and major accidents during the rainy period.

The 21-year-old man's vehicle swerved to the right and hit the pavement because of a water pond caused by rain in the middle of the road. The vehicle also hit two trees on the pavement.

Thousands of motorists had to spend the early hours of Monday morning on Emirates road as a road accident blocked the highway for more than four hours.

Reckless driving

Dubai Police reported 987 accidents during the two-day period of rain due to reckless driving and speeding.

Of the 987 accidents, 41 serious traffic accidents were reported on December 12 and 13.

Most of these accidents were a result of speeding, with six different accidents resulting in injuries, based on statistics from the department.

Around 27 people were injured in these accidents of which two were killed, six were severely injured, four sustained moderate injuries, and 15 had minor ones.

During this period the operations room of Dubai Police received 9,943 emergency calls regarding the rainy conditions.

In Sharjah, police have recorded over 50 accidents in the Eastern Region during the last three days as a result of the rain, police confirmed on Monday.

According to a senior police officer at Sharjah Police, the accidents were attributed to the heavy rainfall that led to low visibility for motorists.

The cities of Khor Fakkan, Kalba and Dibba Al Hosn witnessed 51 road accidents since Friday, which included 46 minor accidents, three big collisions and two vehicles that overturned.

The accidents did not result in any serious injuries, but one case involved two motorists who sustained moderate injuries.

A car which had fallen from a bridge on Emirates road caused traffic jams and prevented motorists from reaching their homes until the early hours of Monday morning.

According to witnesses who were stuck in the traffic jam, it took police several hours to remove the involved car and to clear the road.

"Many police cars were at the scene in addition to tow cars. The accident was near Sonapur area on Emirates road," said a witness. The witness said he was stuck in the same area from 10pm to 2am.
