Dubai: Good drivers will be awarded ‘White Points' that may come in handy when they are pulled up for traffic violations, it was announced on Monday.
The new system, which is expected to be announced in a month, will enable motorists to accumulate ‘white points' if they have not committed any traffic violations for a whole year, said Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafeen, Director of the Dubai Police Traffic Department.
The system is the brainchild of Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai police chief, and aims to encourage motorists to abide by traffic laws.
A meeting was held Monday to coordinate plans and work out mechanisms to implement the new system and study any other related requirements.
Maj Gen Al Zafein told Gulf News that any person who owns a car and holds a driving licence issued in Dubai will be able to collect white points if he or she maintains a clean record for a year.

"The number of white points per year has not been specified yet, it may be eight or 10," he said, adding that the points will be credited to a driver's account automatically and would be a mitigating factor for penalties were he/she to commit a violation.
"The white points can help in scrapping simple offences or reducing car impounding period in case of major traffic violations," Maj Gen Al Zafein said. Further details about the ‘white points' system and its benefits will be announced soon.
The black point system came into effect as part of the unified federal traffic law which was implemented across all emirates from March 1, 2008.
The maximum number of black points a motorist can incur in a year is 24, after which the licence is suspended for three months.
If a motorist collects 24 points a second time, the licence is suspended for six months. A third occurrence will result in the licence being suspended for a year. It will not be returned until the driver passes a training course from an authorised institute.
