Dubai: Good drivers will be awarded ‘White Points' that may come in handy when they are pulled up for traffic violations, it was announced on Monday.

The new system, which is expected to be announced in a month, will enable motorists to accumulate ‘white points' if they have not committed any traffic violations for a whole year, said Major General Mohammad Saif Al Zafeen, Director of the Dubai Police Traffic Department.

The system is the brainchild of Lieutenant General Dahi Khalfan Tamim, Dubai police chief, and aims to encourage motorists to abide by traffic laws.

A meeting was held Monday to coordinate plans and work out mechanisms to implement the new system and study any other related requirements.

Maj Gen Al Zafein told Gulf News that any person who owns a car and holds a driving licence issued in Dubai will be able to collect white points if he or she maintains a clean record for a year.

Automatic credit

"The number of white points per year has not been specified yet, it may be eight or 10," he said, adding that the points will be credited to a driver's account automatically and would be a mitigating factor for penalties were he/she to commit a violation.

"The white points can help in scrapping simple offences or reducing car impounding period in case of major traffic violations," Maj Gen Al Zafein said. Further details about the ‘white points' system and its benefits will be announced soon.

The black point system came into effect as part of the unified federal traffic law which was implemented across all emirates from March 1, 2008.

The maximum number of black points a motorist can incur in a year is 24, after which the licence is suspended for three months.

If a motorist collects 24 points a second time, the licence is suspended for six months. A third occurrence will result in the licence being suspended for a year. It will not be returned until the driver passes a training course from an authorised institute.

There should not be an incentive for following rules, but a strict penalty otherwise. Safe Driving is everyone's responsibility. The White Points earned can let off a serious offender while the victim suffers.

I think its a great idea and a great initiative. This system is already in place across Europe and North America, where drivers with clean records are rewarded with lower car insurance rates and better car financing rates. I think this will curb a lot of irrational driving and will be a rewarding incentive for drivers to pick up and sustain good driving habits. Kudos.

To "earn" something is a great motivation. Earning White Points will motivate the drivers to drive safely and carefully. I think its a great idea!

It seems a little strange to award 'white points' which can be redeemed against bad driving fines, etc. this could make drivers more careless when they know they have enough credits to blot out their penalties. Does not makes sense at all. If they want to reward good drivers put the benefit into more positive reinforcement such as cheaper insurance.

This should not be taken as an advantage for those good drivers who start earning white points, as they may have a feeling that now they can do any thing on the roads. Good Initiative Though From the Authority's Side.

Very good idea, though it may be a temptation for those who already accumulated a lot of white points to try to become reckless driver in anyway they will have white points to cover an offense. White points shoud be redeemed yearly and here are some suggestions of “White Points” reward: 1. One year free parking for paid parking area; 2. Free one year insurance; 3. Discount on licence renewal; 4. Free spare tire; Free car make over; 6. Free Carwash for a year; 7. Free car accessories; etc.

A good move and suggest this has to be extended to other emirates.

It is a great move to encourage good and ethical driving. Its like giving a reward to a child when the child passes wiith good marks! And I would love to earn that reward!

I feel this is a really good initiative by the authorities. It will be a way of providing an incentive to those with good traffic records and will also encourage better driving habits among everyone. Of course, the value of such white points accumulated will also play a major part.
