Dubai: Chewing gum is prohibited on the Dubai Metro and all other modes of public transport including buses and water buses, said a senior official.

Responding to reports about the Metro inspectors issuing fines to commuters chewing gums on board trains, Ramadan Abdullah, Director of the Metro Operations at the Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), confirmed that it is not allowed to chew gum on board trains as it is prohibited by law to eat, drink and smoke on public transport.

A fine of Dh100 is slapped on commuters found violating this rule. It is included in the list of fines stipulated in the Order number 3/2009 governing the Unified Fare of Mass Transport in the Emirate of Dubai, approved by Shaikh Hamdan Bin Mohammad Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council.

"Anybody found violating the public transport use rules will face fine for it is important to ensure comfortable travel for every passenger and protection of public transport properties and facilities," added Abdullah.

He said chewing gum was prohibited because passengers either spit it on the floor or just stick it on the seats, doors or holding bars in the train or buses.

"This action not only ruins the interior of the public transport but also requires extra measures such as use of chemicals and special cleaners to clean it," he added.

However, he said the Metro inspectors are quite flexible with children and elderly while giving fines for eating and drinking violations.

According to the law, the fine could be as small as Dh100 for eating and drinking in the trains and the prohibited areas on stations and bus stops and it could be as high as Dh500 for offences such as destroying, damaging or tampering with devices, equipment or seats of public transport facilities and services

He said the fines are imposed to regulate the public transport service and avoid any inconvenience to commuters.

"We cannot allow passengers to damage the mass transport and its facilities including buses, trains, stations and other services," he said.

These rules will be applicable on all modes of public transport including the metro, public buses and the water buses.

According to the rules, pets are also not allowed on the public transport including Metro, except guide dogs for the visually challenged passengers.

Carrying alcoholic drinks inside the stations or the trains is an offence while spitting, littering and any other act which contaminate or make trains or stations filthy can also get fines.

While eating and drinking (non-alcoholic drinks) is allowed at some dedicated areas including coffee shops and restaurants at the stations, smoking is completely banned on all modes of public transport.

Also, passengers found harassing, causing inconvenience or discomfort to other users of the public transport also face penalties.

Metro users are expected behave and are not allowed to rest their feet on seats as this action can also get them a fine.

Selling or advertising goods inside the trains will also be prohibited by law. Only authorised retailers have selling outlets at the stations.

Entering any prohibited areas at the station or in the trains or attempting to open the doors of the trains or buses will be considered an offence which can lead to fines and even detention.

It will be prohibited for men to enter the women's only cabin while using the places and seats allocated for special needs will also be an offence. Anyone using the emergency exists unless there is an emergency can also be fined.

Were you aware of this rule? Should chewing gum be banned across the country?

Just a response to the reader that said that the Dubai metro should learn from the London Underground System.. I personally think they have, and hence they've banned food, drinks, littering, and chewing gum. Have you seen the state of the tubes in the London Underground System?! They are filthy, they stink and smell, the interiors of the trains are in constant deteriorating condition, you find newspapers, food remains everywhere on the trains! Its disgusting! and I haven't seen anyone fine anybody for littering in any underground stations, instead littering seems to be the norm in stations! and I've lived here for 6 years now! So on a fair point, I wish the London Underground system would learn from Dubai and impose such laws and attempt to ENFORCE them! And i'm a 100% sure the laws 'on drinking water' are not that stringent! We need to understand that all these rules are put in place in an attempt to make a commuter's journey as pleasant and easy as possible...

I have read and Appreciate the roles put by the RTA on all means of transportations in UAE but worried why Taxi were not included. Again, I wish to plead to the RTA to put a big fine on the people who put something in their mouths and throw [it out] around the UAE. The have really made the clean town to become dirty. Even every walls of some building or fence are coloured with their spitting. Appreciating to hear from you.

Its a good move to ban eatables including Chewing gum , this shall help maintain Metro clean. Have many times noticed passengers in taxis and buses , remove the used chewing gum and just stick under seats , windows etc not bothering that they are ruining the public property that is for the use of public including them.....

Why should chewing gum be banned across the country? Tomorrow there will be a ban on drinking water, food and so on. I think the authorities should be very clear on what is banned and what is not. The public is not aware of the constant changes in the rules.

I fail to understand why such a ban is being created. Ban on drinking water and chewing gum - I mean UAE metro is not the first in the world - they should learn from the existing London Underground system. They should fine people littering or hampering the public safety and comfort. Wisely put though - "slapping" the commuters with fine!

This is good for the authorities to revive these rules on good behavior inside the public transportation. It is really annoying to see people of certain nationalities put their feet on the seats, with their dirty and smelly feet as if they are resting in their backyards. Maybe because they are used to it in their own countries, but at least they must follow the rules here. This is what makes people sometimes shun the public transportation, especially during the summer months, when the smell of the public transport is really untolerable.

Oh Em gee! About time! I think, they should also focus on the stinch! i rarely use the Metro, but everytime I ride the Metro I have to COVER my nose! Ofcourse, the government cannot ban those people who SMELLS! but come to think of it, these people are so inconsiderate! they know that they'll be riding the Metro/Bus, and they don't even bother to take a bath?? Some of these people are also professionals, but they still stink!!! not to mention I have encountered these people who even have creatures on their clothes!! CREEPY CRAWLY INSECTS!!!!!
