Abu Dhabi: A car has been impounded for speeding at 248 km/h along the Abu Dhabi-Sweihan highway, police officials said yesterday.

In January alone, 11 cars were seized by the police for "driving at dangerous speeds", in excess of 200 km/h, officials said.

A 27-year-old Emirati was behind the wheel of the car that was seized for speeding at 248 kmph, Gulf News has learnt.

The young man was driving the latest model of a luxury sports car that is capable of going up to 320 km/h, an official, who asked not to be named, said. The man was apparently on his way to his workplace in Sweihan.

Asked if the driver was engaged in racing, the official said: "The man was alone in his car and was not found to be racing with another vehicle".
