Car rental firms who fail to register vehicles will be blocked by police
Police have stopped processing any transactions from car rental agencies that have allowed the registrations of their cars to lapse for more than three months, a senior police official said.
Dubai: Police have stopped processing any transactions from car rental agencies that have allowed the registrations of their cars to lapse for more than three months, a senior police official said.
Brigadier Mohammad Saif Al Zafein, Director of Dubai Police's Traffic Department, had earlier called on car rental agencies to renew the registrations of their vehicles before the end of last year or face having their traffic transactions blocked.
He said the time given to car rental agencies has ended with the start of the New Year. As of January 1, the traffic department has stopped processing any transactions from car rental agencies and will not register cars for the agencies which have not renewed the registrations of their cars for more than three months.
Dh17m in fines
Brigadier Al Zafein pointed out that currently there are 5,000 unregistered cars belonging to car rental agencies. The registrations of these 5,000 cars expired more than three months ago and have pending fines worth Dh17 million in 765 car rental agencies in Dubai.
He has also warned that if a car rental agency has unregistered cars, by next year, the entire traffic file of the agency will be blocked until it clears the situation and renews the registrations of the cars.
Brigadier Al Zafein said that, like private users, car rental agencies can find out how much the traffic fines are from Dubai Police website, www.dubaipolice.gov.ae. He said the entry of fines into the system does not take a long time.
Brigadier Al Zafein also said that car rental agencies that have traffic offences which require confiscation of cars will not have their cars confiscated if they pay the fine before September 17, 2008.
However, those who do not pay the fines by that date will have the cars confiscated.
Brigadier Al Zafein said the goal behind these procedures is to protect customers who rent cars and their right in getting a safe, registered car.
He said driving unregistered cars on the roads is dangerous because the cars may not be in a good condition. By renting an unregistered car, the car rental agency is endangering customers' lives and giving an uncivilised image of the city.
